Course outline

What is the course about?

Using some of the techniques and concepts of NLP to help you discover purpose in your life, make the right decisions and gain a better understanding of your beliefs and values.

What topics will we cover?

Timeline
Affirmations
Beliefs and values – how to change limiting beliefs
Decision making – 'Visual Squash' exercise.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Compose and use effective affirmations…..
Use the timeline exercise to plan outcomes
Chunk my outcomes down into small achievable goals
Use language indicators to access my beliefs and values
Sort beliefs into those that limit or empower me
Work on changing limiting beliefs
Use the Visual Squash exercise to resolve conflicting emotions
Develop awareness of my submodalities so as to make decisions more quickly, easily and appropriately.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

People with no knowledge of NLP as well as those with some knowledge and experience of the subject.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor lecturing, students discussing and asking questions, written individual exercises, small group exercises involving speaking, listening and some movement. Students will be given suggestions for work that can be undertaken at home after the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Handouts will be given but students benefit greatly from making their own notes during the session. A notebook and pen are essential and students are encouraged to keep a journal for their personal development after the course. NLP books will be recommended during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. It is difficult to assess progress in NLP since it can take time to fully understand some of the concepts. Although some people have a natural ability at communication, most of us need practice in order to use language NLP elegantly and develop our sensory acuity. You can expect your tutor to give you verbal feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor. Self assessment is very useful as it encourages skills of Intrapersonal Intelligence but students should not be discouraged if they cannot confidently use all the techniques by the end of the day.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be asked to complete a course evaluation form at the end of the course and your tutor will be pleased to hear verbal feedback. Your views are essential to planning future courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 201 of the 10-11 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
