Course outline

What is the course about?

This workshop is all about making decisions: how to decide between different courses of action; how to determine what is a good option to pursue; how to use your intuition; and how to get off the fence and commit to a decision. The course looks at the psychology behind decision-making and provides useful techniques to help you make better decisions.

What topics will we cover?

Topics will include:
Making choices
Dealing with uncertainty
How to take informed risks
When and how to use instinct or analysis to make smart decisions
How to deal with obstacles, lethargy and criticism when pursuing goals.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand different options and when necessary know how to increase these
Deal with uncertainty
Manage success and learn from failure
Know when to hold on to a course of action and when to quit
Take decisions and make better ones.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

If English is not your first language then you need to have a good understanding of spoken English. You should come to the course with an open mind and be prepared to participate in a range of discussions and exercises.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The workshops will be participatory and include individual exercises, small group and whole class discussions, techniques to try out in pairs, case studies to consider and some mini lectures from the tutor.

You will be encouraged to use and reflect on what you learn in the workshops outside the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be given a list of recommended books to read in your own time but you do not need to purchase any books.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are two other 1 day courses to develop your thinking skills which complement this workshop:
Right Brain Coaching
Creativity and Lateral Thinking.
