Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will provide a safe setting to review your capacity to live a confident lifestyle, learn skills that will support and help you to plan for a more fulfilling life. It is intended as a follow on course for those who have completed 'Raising Your Self Esteem' and wish to develop their confidence further. It is also suitable as a free-standing course and the tutor will aim to meet the needs of a wide range of learners, across different levels.

What topics will we cover?

Appraisal of the ‘grid of life”.
Create a power plan.
Review behaviour that supports you.
Plan for living confidently.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Define the key elements of living confidently.
Produce a power plan for living up to your potential.
Practise behavioural strategies that will support you.
Create an action plan to support you.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior training, experience or skills are necessary. The course is particularly suitable for students who have completed the Raising Your Self Esteem course although this is not essential. Since the course is interactive, students are expected to have a good level of comprehension and spoken English to benefit from the course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course teaching will be a mix of tutor presentations, student exercises and skills practise in small groups, and group discussion. Students will be encouraged to participate and draw upon their own life skills and experience so it is essential to have good spoken English. The tutor will ask you to keep a learning journal throughout the course and to complete some homework outside class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. Resources and references to further reading will be available during the course.
The tutor will be using ideas and exercises from: Jeffers S (1998): Feel the Fear..,, and Beyond (London Rider).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The Psychology & Counselling department offers a wide range of allied courses and the tutor will be pleased to advise you about other options.
