Course outline

What is the course about?

Abraham Maslow's eight steps that can empower you to make better life choices. Maslow is acknowledged by Ken Wilber and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to have made a unique contribution to our knowledge of our human potentialities.

What topics will we cover?

Maslow’s theory of Being and Becoming to prime you or set you up as he observed, for “actual living experiences rather than preparing to live”
The theory of the Jonah complex or counter-valuing
The eight steps which “guarantee better life choices” (Maslow)
Guided practice of the eight steps.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand what being and becoming your potentialities actually means
Recognise the Jonah complex or the tendency to counter-value in yourself and others
Practice ways of being and becoming so that at “choice points, you can come to know what your destiny is, who your partner will be, what your mission in life will be” (Maslow).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Open to all. Please bear in mind that you will gain more from this course if your understanding of English enables you to follow the presentations on the topic as well as the instructions for the skills exercise. You will increase your level of satisfaction on the course if your level of spoken English enables you to participate in the small and large group reflexive dialogue.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be theory supported by handouts and mixed media presentations. You are encouraged to find your own level of participation in the group process and in guided individual experiential learning. Each exercise will be followed by small group and large group dialogue. We will have a cooperative agreement to encourage and support your learning. There will not be any work that you have to do outside the class but you are invited to practicse what you learn.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to acquire and read any book by Abraham Maslow but this is not a prerequisite for the course. You will be offered a reference list. Please bring pen and paper if you wish to make notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. On-going feedback individually and through group discussion.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. An end of course City Lit evaluation form will also be completed.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
