This is a Drama therapy course that offers an opportunity to identify, explore and reflect on the ‘roles’ we all get used to playing in our lives. We will consider how well they work for us and by evoking a spirit of ‘play’ we will make up some new ones, try them on for size and consider loosening our attachment to set, ‘fixed roles’.
The final aim of course is to explore the position of simply ‘being’ ourselves and to gain more awareness of how we act or react so that we can make new choices, appropriate to the different situations we face.
We will consider the theories and significance of ‘roles’ and their meaning by touching on psychology and the work of Robert J. Landy, a Drama Therapy practitioner. We will then employ the models of Embodiment, Projection and Role, taken from the work of Sue Jennings, in order to uncover, employ and co-direct new scenes and role play. We will also consider the teaching of Stanislavsky, Jungian ‘archetypes’ and ‘Forum Theatre’ techniques.
Explain the significance of ‘roles’ on a theoretical level.
Use artful projection methods to explore and gain personal insights.
Use ‘role play’ techniques to help identify roles you have played in your life and explore new ones.
Take part in, co- direct and act out scenes which explore ‘choices’ and new ways of ‘being‘.
Increase your self awareness by sharing and observing your own roles and those of others.
Explain the significance of the internal ‘observer’.
Adopt a more relaxed conscious way of being, behaving and having fun!
It is mainly a practical course that allows the student to get a flavour of Drama therapy and some of its benefits.
The aim of this course is therapeutic and educational so you do not need previous experience or drama skills.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. Please be willing to take part in group discussion, activities and role play.
You will be taught through a mixture of individual and pair work, small and large groups. The tutor will deliver a small amount of theory on the significance of ‘Roles’ in everyday life and the theory base of Drama therapy.
We will also use projective play methods working across different art mediums and use different role play methods.
There is nothing you need to bring and hand-outs will be provided.
The tutor suggests that you wear comfy, loose clothing.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The ongoing pairs and small group activities in class will enable you to check your understanding with other students and the tutor.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
