Course outline

What is the course about?

This course has three central concerns: positive emotions, positive individual traits and positive institutions. As the course invites you to take a personal journey, you will explore these 3 areas, increase your understanding of your self and others and be encouraged to grow and change.

What topics will we cover?

1. What are the main factors in psychological research considered to be most conducive to happiness?
2. How might we change our lives to apply those factors more effectively?
3. What does "courage" mean in psychological research?
4. How can we become more courageous?
5. What is Maslow's self-actualization? In what way does it lead us towards self-fulfilment?
6. In what way are higher levels of creativity helpful in our everyday life?

By the end of this course you should be able to:

1. Describe and discuss positive emotions, positive individual traits, and positive institutions;
2. Describe theories and research concerning these issues.
3. Applying this knowledge to your personal life and personal questions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

An introductory course. No previous knowledge is required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, small group work and discussions
Buying a textbook would be advantageous but not essential – a list of these will be provided. There will be handouts from the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No, but bring pen and paper for keeping notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
