The course is about acquiring an understanding of mental illnesses throughout history with a focus in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual. We will look at the causes, symptoms, treatments, to the studied psychopathologies from the main models. i.e psychological, Biological and Social.

Differentiate the origins, symptoms and treatments of mental illnesses
Understand the different approaches to mental illness from a variety of perspectives
Identify and further your knowledge on the different treatments for mental illnesses
Have an insight, through clinician experience, into the reality of the NHS mental health system in the UK.
You need to understand English sufficiently well to read and participate actively in class discussions.
You will be taught through lectures, electronic devices, such as Power Point Presentations, and DVDs. There will be group and individual work. The learning will be interactive. You will need to read before class to contribute to the class discussions.
Buying books is optional and certain texts will be recommended on the course.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor.
