Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to specific areas of modern psychology (see list below).

What topics will we cover?

- What are emotions?
- How do we develop morally?
- How do we make decisions?
- What is abnormality?
- What can we learn about ourselves from parapsychology?

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand psychological terminology appropriate to the level of the course
Describe some of the psychological developments made in the 20th century
Apply basic theories to your understanding of your every day life
Describe the process of emotions and the use of emotions in our lives
Explain how our morals are formed from our cultural and societal environment
Discuss the difficulties when trying to differentiate abnormality from normality
List the different categories of mental illness and describe their symptoms and possible treatments
Understand ourselves through parapsychology.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is introductory. You will need to speak English fluently and be able to read and write in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will consist of group work and interactive lectures. Students will be given suggestions for further optional reading on the topics covered.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students will be advised of an optional core text book which will serve them for all psychology courses they take.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
