Course outline

What is the course about?

There are ten behaviours that dramatically improve the way people think and thus the way they work and live.
Listening – the quality of people’s attention for each other - is the core of this method.

What topics will we cover?

Becoming aware of our listening and thinking behaviour patterns

Identifying blocks to giving respectful attention to others

Defining the ten components of a Listening Organisation

Using incisive questions to remove blocks to thinking

Listening respectfully to enable others to think more clearly in our presence.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Become aware of your listening and thinking behaviour patterns
Identify blocks to giving respectful attention to others
Define the ten components of a Listening Organisation
Devise incisive questions to remove limiting assumptions
Listen respectfully so that others can think more clearly in your presence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For anyone who wishes they could listen better to others and create more time to think ideas through. The level is suitable for anyone wishing to build stronger relationships with colleagues, children and friends; to have more productive meetings, solve business problems through teamwork and create bold strategies. A listening and thinking environment offers a new world of possibilities. You will need to participate in course activities and discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole-class teaching, small group activities, practical exercises and discussion topics. You are encouraged to develop these skills after the completion of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
