What is the course about?

Listening is the key to improving your communication skills for personal or professional reasons, reducing misunderstandings and building more rewarding relationships. Explore the nature of this profoundly important and complex skill and discover your blocks. Practise your skills to become a first class listener; invaluable in social interactions, at work, for interviews, meetings and when attending or delivering presentaions.

What topics will we cover?

What is listening?
Listen and recall or switch off and discard?
Terrible and terrific listeners.
How good a listener are you? Self-assessment.
'Who's a good sport?' - tutor demonstration of good and bad listening.
'I bet this'll be boring' - what stops you listening?
Overcoming blocks to listening.
Concentration: sustained listening exercise.
The Listening Trio: attending, following & reflecting skills.
Are you attending? The role of body language.
'Guess What?' Questioning skills; seeking clarification

Practise the following skills:
Storytelling: watching for clues
Do they mean what they say & say what they mean?
Reflecting skills: listening for facts and feelings, summarising and empathy
Decisions, decisions: empowering the speaker
The dog and the monkey: what did they say, what did you hear?

The role of the speaker: communication is two way.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Describe your good and bad listening behaviours
Identify your listening blocks and strategies to overcome them
Use the listening skills trio: attending, following, reflecting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior knowledge of the subject is required. Actvities and practical exercises involve reading and reflecting on content, and discussion/contributions in small and large groups. There is a sustained listening exercise in pairs, where on person reads and the other listens, concentrating for several minutes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a participative course involving discussion, individual self-assessment, cartoons, listening practice and fun activities in pairs, groups and plenary. The trainer will also demonstrate good and bad listening and provide information through lecture style, powerpoint slides and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pen and notebook with you.The trainer will provide plenty of handouts to back up the course content and learning.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. This course is particularly relevant for those considering taking a counselling or life coaching course.
