Course outline

What is the course about?

Finding out more about some of the main perspectives in modern Psychology: theory and its application to everyday life.

What topics will we cover?

Freud and the unconscious, group behaviour, the psychology of prejudice, memory and perception, decision making.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand and appreciate the depth and breadth of psychology.
Apply basic theories to your understanding of everyday life.
Appreciate how the brain and social environment interact.
Appreciate psychological explanations for how prejudice may develop.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is introductory. You will need to speak English fluently and be able to read and write in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will consist of group work and short interactive lectures. Students will be given suggestions for further optional reading on the topics covered.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students will be advised of an optional core text book which will serve them for all psychology courses they take.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your learning at the end of the course and identify future learning goals.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
