Muhibur Rahman: City Lit - a life changing experience!
City Lit – a life-changing experience!
by Muhibur Rahman
I have been stammering since I was 8 years old. Sometimes I thought I had conquered my stammer. Other times my stammer conquered me. I felt that my stammer held me back in everything that I did. I couldn't see myself achieving my full potential at work, at home and educationally. At one point in my life I reached the stage of no return as my stammering got so bad that I knew I had to get some external help.
At City Lit, I was shown ways in which I could cope with my stammer. I learnt that stammering is part of who I am and that I should learn to accept myself first before I could do anything about my stammer.
As well as working on speech management, the process of desensitisation helped me to be more open and accepting of my stammer. The advice and experience I picked up from other people with a stammer at City Lit was also invaluable. The fact that some of the therapists were stammerers themselves also helped.
