This course combines work on becoming less sensitive about stammering, reducing avoidance behaviours related to stammering, learning strategies to manage moments of stammering more easily, and cognitive therapy (working on negative thoughts). It will provide you with the opportunity to explore your feelings and attitudes towards stammering as well as concentrated speech work.
The course will cover:
- Identification of the overt (physical stammering behaviours) and covert (hidden thoughts and feelings about stammering) aspects of stammering
- Becoming less sensitive about stammering; this includes exploring:
- Desensitisation work including exploring difficult feelings about stammering and gradually working on avoidance reduction within a supportive environment
- Speech work: this is aimed at helping you change your stammering towards an easier, more fluent pattern of speech.
1. Identify at least 3 overt and 3 covert stammering features in yourself
2. Reduce at least 2 avoidance behaviours within the group
3. Reduce at least 2 avoidance behaviours outside of the group
4. Speak in a previously identified challenging situation outside of the group
5. Reduce your stammering behaviour within the group.
6. Reduce your stammering behaviour outside of the group in a number of situations.
This is a course for people who have an interiorised stammer, i.e. high/fairly high levels of fluency and high avoidance of stammering. You may or may not have had any previous speech therapy. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary
Before joining the class you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team.
There is a large component of practical work. Visual aids including video and handouts are used. Work will be undertaken both in the whole group and smaller sub-groups using a wide variety of communication activities. You are encouraged to extend therapy into working on your speech outside and to take an increasing level of responsibility for your learning.
There are no other real costs although you are asked to bring a notebook to sessions. We recommend you read the book 'Self-therapy for the stutterer' by Malcolm Fraser alongside the course. This can be borrowed from the City Lit library or bought from the British Stammering Association for around £8.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be asked to evaluate your own progress throughout the course. At the start you set yourself goals and your progress in relation to these will be discussed during the course. Feedback from tutors and other students is an important and ongoing part of the course which will also let you know how you are progressing. At the end of the course you will be asked to write a self report in which you look back at the course and evaluate your learning.
In addition, your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor who will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on a standard form (the Statement of Learning).
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be encouraged to give your views throughout the course.

You can do a Stage 2 stammering therapy course or a theme based workshop (e.g. Mindfulness Meditation for people who stammer). A Refresher workshop is held in March 2012 and is an excellent opportunity to revise what you have learnt on the evening course and will help you to maintain progress.
