This course is about revising and developing work you have already done on a Stage 1 evening course or an intensive course. You will review the speech work you have already covered and explore ways of further extending its use in everyday life. You will continue working towards becoming more open about and desensitised to stammering.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the course curriculum and the content will be determined by the needs of you and the other group participants. There is likely to be some revision of identification, desensitisation and speech work.
Outcome will be determined by your own aims. We deliberately do not set specific learning objectives for this course as we believe it is important for people at this stage of therapy to be working on their own specific goals.
This course is for people who stammer and who have had previous speech therapy. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary
Before joining the class you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team.
There is a large component of practical work. Visual aids including video and handouts are used. Work will be undertaken both in the whole group and smaller sub-groups using a wide variety of communication activities. You are encouraged to extend therapy into working on your speech outside and to take an increasing level of responsibility for your learning.
None.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from yourself and others, including the tutor. In addition, your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor who will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on a standard form (the Statement of Learning).
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be encouraged to give your views throughout the course.
