What is the course about?

The course is about you developing your communication skills within a supportive group. You will have the opportunity to share your experiences and learn new ways to communicate. You will participate in social conversations, discussions and more structured activities. The needs of individuals will be addressed.

What topics will we cover?

You will identify your communication strengths and difficulties. You will set personal goals for change and work on this through conversation discussion and structured tasks including word games and activities. Some reading and writing activities will be included.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

1. Respond to specific questions.
2. Express your opinions/feelings/ ideas/experiences in group conversations.
3. To use more effective ways of supporting your speech, e.g. signing, sketching, writing.
4. Notice when you need to pause and retry a word during a conversation.
5. Ask for help with a task within the group or with a problem you are facing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for people with aphasia (a communication difficulty following a stroke or head injury), dysarthria and other communication difficulties. Some previous speech therapy is recommended. To join the group you will need to:
- Listen and respond to single words/gestures/pictures
- Respond to each other
- Share interests
Before joining the class, you will need an advisory session (free of charge) with one of the speech therapy team.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will join in group discussions, work with a partner or small groups. The tutor will guide the discussion and group work activities. Activities will be designed with individual needs in mind.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from yourself and others, including the tutor. In addition, your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor who will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on a standard form (the Statement of Learning).

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be encouraged to give your views throughout the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.
