What is the course about?

This practical workshop introduces you to the theory underpinning narrative ways of working and provides a good introduction to key narrative practices. The approach is relevant for therapists working with a range of client groups. Application to different client groups will be discussed.

What topics will we cover?

- Introduction to the theory underpinning narrative therapy:
- Looking at the way in which the broader social context affects and shapes people’s lives
- Eternalising’ conversations: the person is the person, the problem is the problem
- Listening for ‘sparkling moments’ (alternative narratives)
- Re-authoring’ conversations: working collaboratively and respectfully to re-author the stories of people’s lives
- Narrative questioning: asking questions that make a difference.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify 2 key influences of narrative therapy
- Recognise and reflect on how the social context affects and shapes people’s lives and the stories they tell
- Practice ‘externalising’ conversations
- Identify ‘sparkling moments’ i.e.openings to alternative narratives
- Demonstrate an appreciation of how narrative questioning and re-storying can re-shape clients’ relationships with problems
- Explain how narrative ideas and practices can be used to support speech therapy.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for qualified speech & language therapists working with a range of client groups. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a large experiential component to the course as well as some theoretical input and practical sessions. Stories of therapeutic conversations with adults who stammer, DVDs, transcripts and therapeutic documents will be shared. Handouts will be used.
