Working with adults who stammer

Speech and language therapists working with adults who stammer can explore block modification, group work and art therapy, through lectures and workshops, with a large experiential component. This course runs between 5 March - 9 March 2012, with a single follow-up day on 15 October 2012.

Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about qualified speech and language therapists developing their knowledge and skills for working with people who stammer.

What topics will we cover?

- Block modification therapy
- Avoidance reduction therapy
- Interiorised stammering
- Art therapy
- Acceptance and commitment therapy: an introduction
- Assessment and selection
- Experiential workshop - skills practice with clients
- other approaches.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

1. Describe the stages of block modification therapy
2. Identify levels of avoidance
3. Identify how acceptance and commitment therapy can be useful for working with adults who stammer
4. Have used art therapy techniques in relation to your own experience and identify how such approaches could be useful for adults who stammer
5. Identify other therapy approaches for adults who stammer
6. Identify a relevant approach for interiorised stammering
7. Put into practice teaching block modification.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for qualified speech and language therapists. To access the course you will need to be able to understand and express yourself in English and relate the topics being taught to your own experience and practice. You will also need to be able to give and receive feedback. Before joining the class, you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is a combination of tutorial input, small and large group discussion and experiential learning. Videos and handouts are used.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback from yourself, other people in the group and from the tutor. In addition, your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor who will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on a standard form (the Statement of Learning).

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be encouraged to give your views throughout the course.
