Course outline

What is the course about?

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a powerful new approach to therapy and has been demonstrated to be effective with a wide range of difficulties. There are two braod aims to the approach: you'll learn a range of skills to help you deal with negative thoughts and feelings so that they have far less influence on your life. Also you'll identify what's really important to you (your valued directions) and through ACT's particular style of goal-setting you'll move towards taking your life in the directions you want to go. ACT encourages action - it's not just 'talking about your problems' type of therapy, you'll come away with some very practical skills for taking positive action.

What topics will we cover?

- What acceptance and commitment therapy is
- Letting go of the struggle
- The impact of avoidance
- Defusion - creating a distance between you and your thoughts
- Mindfulness
- Identifying valued life directions
- Goal setting.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Have a greater awareness of your thoughts and feelings
- Use skills to deal more effectively with negative thoughts and feelings
- Identify what's important to you in your life (with regard to work, family, friends, leisure interests)
- Set goals to start to move your life in the direction you want.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for people who stammer and who've ideally done some kind of speech work. It may be you've done a course at City Lit or a different kind of course. This course can still be relevant to you, regardless of the type of speech work you've completed so far. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary
Before joining the class you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A variety of teaching methods will be used including: discussion, working in pairs/small groups, self exploration, demonstration, video feedback and practical exercises/role play. Handouts will be provided.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Through discussion and feedback from yourself and others.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You can give your views throughout the course.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 201 of the 10-11 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can do a Stage 1 evening course or one of our intensive courses if you haven't attended one previously. Alternatively you can do any of our Stage 2 courses including topic-based workshops.
