Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about providing you with some key skills for speaking more confidently to groups and to give you the opportunity to practise speaking to groups. This course will be relevant to people wanting to develop their confidence speaking in a range of situations including presentations, meetings and interviews.

Feedback on this course is always framed in the positive and is about highlighting the things you are doing well as a speaker. This can help you learn to trust yourself, enabling you to develop your own authentic communicative style. In our experince, once you start to do more of the things you do well, your increase in confidence leads to taking on more speaking challenges.

What topics will we cover?

- Introductions
- Standards of support
- Guidelines for effective speaking
- Guidelines for effective listening
- Giving and receiving positive feedback
- Opportunities to speak in front of the group.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- List at least two key skills for speaking more confidently in front of a group
- Identify ways to help you be yourself when speaking to a group
- Give an impromptu talk more easily
- Give and receive positive feedback.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To access this course you will need to follow verbal and written instructions in English and ask for clarification where necessary. You will be prepared to give and receive feedback and be willing to speak in small groups as well as the whole group, so that you can develop your confidence talking in front of others.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is very much about practising key skills to develop your confidence when speaking to groups. You will learn about giving talks and presentations through doing it yourself in a positive non-judgenental environment. Handouts will be provided.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
