Course outline

What is the course about?

This course looks at the concept of leadership and the main areas of skill required of good leader-managers. It is suitable for you if you are in a leadership/management role and have had no or little previous training. The course is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management at Level 3.
You will attend for 7 sessions between November and February and will complete various distance learning tasks.

You cannot directly enrol for this course. You need to complete an application form. You can contact us for a copy. Applicants will be considered on the basis of their application and suitable applicants will then be offered an interview before a final offer is made (see below). Alternatively, you can download it from this website.

What topics will we cover?

The qualities and skills needed for leadership, building, maintaining and leading teams and decision-making/problem-solving.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Identify your strengths and weaknesses as a leader and plan your future development
• Recognise your management style and use it and other styles to good effect
• Employ appropriate motivation methods to build and maintain your work team
• Use specific decision-making tools to support your efficiency and effectiveness at work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 3 course. You need to be confident enough to write assignments in English (there are 2) and also have the ability to use the internet for research and for on-line work.
You will need to
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research and analyse material in textbooks and on the internet
• Write concisely for different work purposes, using accurate grammar and spelling.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The guided part of the course is the equivalent of 12 sessions. Some of these ( 7) will be undertaken in class, the others will be distance learning sessions, working at home or in your organisation, using the packs we provide. You will be given specific ‘homework’ tasks and should expect to do about 3 hours work per week on top of the class or distance learning hours.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are advised to buy 2 good management text book costing £15 - 20. We will advise you which ones to buy. We hope all students will be registered on SKYPE since this will allow chats and conference calls on line. (SKYPE can be downloaded free, and there’s no need for a camera!).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form. Once we have received your application form, we will check the course is right for you, and ask you to an informal interview in September/October. If you do not have a level 2 qualification in English (eg GCSE) we will ask you to complete a brief initial assessment.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will receive detailed feedback on your assignments, and your work will be checked by an internal and external moderator.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
We will discuss this with you at interview. If you have special requirements related to a disability, you should contact the access to learning department – accesstolearning@citylit.ac.uk as soon as you apply.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can carry on to complete the certificate and diploma in leadership and management at other centres. You can register with the Institute of Leadership and Management as a student member while you are on the course.
