What is the course about?

This practical course is designed for managers or experienced staff in the public or private sector who are interested in coaching/mentoring colleagues. The programme leads to the Institute of Leadership and Management Award in Workplace Coaching.

What topics will we cover?

The course will include both group sessions and 6 hours practice in your workplace. You will also be asked to complete two written assignments.

The content includes:
Coaching and mentoring theory and practice
Protocols for coaching
Specific coaching skills and methods
Keeping appropriate records of coaching sessions
Coaching resources.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Show you understand the key processes and principles of effective coaching
Explain how coaching develops skills and motivation in coachees
Coach new or inexperienced staff
Organise and negotiate coaching sessions
Keep records of your sessions

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course in coaching at level 3.
You will need need to be able to
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research and analyse material in textbooks and on the internet
• Write concisely for different work purposes, using accurate grammar and spelling.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group sessions involve:
* Tasks, pair work, wordstorm, role-play.
* Presentations
* Large and small group work

You will also receive two tutorials during the programme .

To achieve the award you will need to
- Attend all of the sessions
- Complete assignments during the course (there are two)
- Coach a colleague for a minimum of 6 sessions
- Keep records and reflect on your application of coaching skills.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are a number of excellent guides to Coaching and Mentoring. The titles of these will be given out during the course. The cost of these ranges from £12 to £20. You will only need to buy one or two of the recommended books (a few of these can be loaned from the City Lit Learning Centre).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will complete a portfolio of assignments which will be checked by an internal and external moderator.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will have a chance to give your views by completing a final written evaluation. You will also be invited to give verbal feedback throughout the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are a number of relevant courses which provide further training. These are delivered in a variety of ways, including e-learning. Courses validated by the Institute of Leadership and Management, for instance, include the ILM Level 4 Diploma in Management, Coaching and Mentoring.
