What is the course about?

This is a series of 12 workshops to support trainee teachers in Lifelong Learning brush up their personal skills to meet the national requirement for qualified teachers in the sector. You should normally be on a teacher training course for teachers in the post compulsory sector, at City Lit or elsewhere

The workshops will enable you to develop some or all of the necessary concepts and skills, depending on your previous experience. If you are ready, you will have the opportunity to take the national level 2 Numeracy test.

What topics will we cover?

Key areas covered, as appropriate to individuals are:
Numbers
Measure, space and shape
Data handling

By the end of this course you should be able to:

You can expect to be able to achieve some or all of the following, depending on your experience:

Solve problems involving decimals, fractions and percentages
Use, and calculate, scale and ratio
Calculate perimeter, area and volume
Calculate with money, time and temperature
Apply units of measure and convert between imperial and metric systems
Use formulae
Read and interpret tables and graphs
Analyse data.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course leads to a level 2 qualification. You should be at Level 1 or above in your numeracy skills on entry. Before applying you should do a self assessment of your current skills on the Move On website: www.move-on.org.uk.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by a combination of group/individual and pair work, with group discussion, true or false and matching cards activities, computer activities, worksheets and practice exam papers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may choose to buy a text book to practise at home.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form. We do not interview for this course but you will need to confirm your starting level on your application form. We will initially assess your skills during the first sessions of the course.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You will have the opportunity to take the national level 2 numeracy test. There is also an opportunity to take GCSE Maths at City Lit.
