Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for teachers, support workers, volunteers and frontline staff who work with adults with language, literacy or numeracy (Skills for Life) needs. It is intended to offer an introduction to the national Skills for Life strategy and provide an opportunity to take the City and Guilds Level 2 Award in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT Awareness. As part of the City and Guilds accreditation requirements, you will be asked to undertake assessments during this course.

What topics will we cover?

-Defining the term Skills for Life
-Identifying the scale of need nationally and locally
-Determining who are Skills for Life learners
-Considering the reasons for poor skills, the impact and the barriers faced by adults in education and at work
-Discussing approaches to overcome barriers to learning
-Outlining the ‘basic’ skills required for everyday tasks
-Supporting Skills for Life learners with learning difficulties and disabilities
-Using screening tools to identify a Skills for Life need and offering constructive feedback to learners
-Exploring types of provision available and signposting to local provision and models of support.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Define Skills for Life and have an awareness locally and nationally of the need and the types of provision available
Determine the key barriers for learners with Skills for Life needs and outline how these can be overcome
Demonstrate an awareness of assessment methods, and use and evaluate a range of screening and initial assessment tools.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is delivered at Level 2. It is expected that you will already have a Level 2 qualification in English and/or maths. To undertake the course and complete the City and Guilds assessments you will need to be able to read and interpret written tasks, and organise written information clearly and coherently - writing legibly in full sentences.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a classroom setting and will be required to work with other learners in the group to complete tasks. Homework and small research tasks may be given out during class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring a pen and lined paper with you to class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students You can discuss any support you need at the assessment and enrolment session or with your tutor during the course.
