What is the course about?

This course leads to a nationally recognised professional qualification for teachers who are already working in further, adult and community education.

You cannot directly enrol for this course. There is a selection process including assessments and an interview.

What topics will we cover?

The course aims to enable you to develop your practical teaching and training skills, alongside developing an understanding of the principles and practice of adult teaching and learning.

Theory
- The characteristics of the adult learner
- Basic teaching methods and techniques
- Planning lessons
- How to check your students are learning
- Some basic group management techniques
- Teaching inclusively

Practice
- Regular teaching practice in your peer group (microteaching)
- Compiling a teaching practice file during the course, including a group profile, Scheme of Work, session plans and session evaluations for a minimum of 10 hours
- Observations of your teaching practice
- Observing an experienced teacher in your subject area.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
- Select appropriate teaching and learning approaches in your specialist area
- Plan Course Outline, Schemes of Work and lesson plans which meet learners’ needs and curriculum requirements
- Deliver learning based upon the teaching/training cycle
- Demonstrate how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
- Apply and evaluate different assessment methods and recognise the need for record keeping
- Develop and apply minimum core specifications in literacy, language, mathematics and ICT user skills to improve own practice and support the Functional Skills of your learners, as required in your subject area
- Evaluate and reflect on own teaching practice, taking into account others' feedback

To achieve the award you will need to
- Attend 80% of the course
- Complete a successful microteaching session
- Pass your teaching practice observations
- Produce a portfolio of assignments.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

In order to get the most from this course you will need to be able to:
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research, read, comprehend and analyse text
• Write concisely, using different styles, format and structure for different purposes, applying accuracy in grammar, punctuation and spelling

This course is taught at Level 4. Before enrolling on the course you will be asked to carry out an initial assessment to demonstrate you are ready to start studying at this level in English. At interview you will be asked to provide evidence of your subject qualifications, as well as evidence of level 2 (eg. GCSE) Maths and English and a letter from your employer to confirm the courses you will be teaching whilst on the course.

You are expected to be competent in using ICT skills for your learning and teaching.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group sessions will involve:
- Tasks - individual and in small groups, pair work, brainstorm, role-play
- Large and small group work
- Visit to observe other tutors
- Simulated teaching on the course
- Tutorials

In addition you are required to
- Write reflective journals during the course
- Undertake self study in between sessions as guided by your tutor
- Maintain a teaching practice file, including Group Profile, Course Outline, Scheme(s) of Work, lesson plans and evaluations of sessions you teach
-Participate in forum discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

We recommended you purchase the following:
Francis, M., Gould, J., (2009) Achieving Your PTTLS: A Practical Guide to Successful Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector London Sage Publications (approx. £14.00 www.amazon.co.uk)

You will need a course folder to organise session handouts, task sheets, notes from sessions, etc. In addition, for your portfolio we recommend that you use a lever arch file with a plastic cover, preferably.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form. You must complete all sections of our application form to be considered for an interview and initial assessment. An offer of a place on the course depends on your success during the whole application process.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Self review and peer feedback is encouraged during the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will also have a chance to give your views through verbal and written feedback in the sessions and in tutorials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can continue from here to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector or PGCE/Cert.Ed,, or to the Diploma in Teaching (Cert Ed/PGCE). Your course tutor will discuss your progression and give you appropriate advice.
