What topics will we cover?

The course aims to foster a critical understanding of the Lifelong Learning Sector for practitioners at various stages in their teaching careers. It aims to provide novice teachers with a solid foundation in key issues connected with learning, teaching, assessment and classroom management in a supportive environment, whilst enabling more experienced practitioners to build on their educational knowledge and professional expertise in learning and teaching.

At all stages of the course participants will be facilitated in:
• developing reflective and analytical approaches to theory and practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector;
• engaging effectively with the climate of rapid change impacting on the Lifelong Learning Sector at subject, institutional and sector levels;
• evaluating a range of theoretical perspectives and linking these to practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector;
• evaluating own practice in the light of a range of educational theory of lifelong learning; and
• developing higher education, career and professional development planning skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Develop the following practical skills:
• Plan, deliver and evaluate teaching sessions that meet the individual needs of their learners;
• Develop learning and teaching materials for own subject area;
• Apply appropriate learning and teaching strategies that take account of individual learner’s needs;
• Use a range of assessment activities that produce valid, reliable and sufficient evidence to assess learner performance and monitor learner progress;
• Facilitate and evaluate different methods of feedback as a tool for learning;
• Reflect on, evaluate and develop own practice;
• Develop teaching practice using technology-enhanced learning activities;
• Develop teaching practice through reference to relevant theories of learning;
• Evaluate and develop the curriculum.

Develop knowledge and understanding:
• Design, implement and evaluate specific teaching programmes showing an understanding of the principles and methods of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation;
• Describe and address a range of issues relating to equality, inclusion and managing student diversity in learning, teaching and assessment within the context of the Lifelong Learning Sector;
• Apply a range of the literature on theory and practice within the Lifelong Learning Sector to own practice
• Identify services available to support learner and enhance their access and progression.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be able to:
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research, read, comprehend and analyse text
• Write concisely, using different styles, format and structure for different purposes, applying accuracy in grammar, punctuation and spelling
• You will need to be competent and confident in using ICT. You will be required to Word process all assignments (and be able to use tools within this application), communicate via e-mail, use the Internet to access up to date educational research, use online forums and be able to use various tools on our Virtual Learning Environment (you will be given support for this).

This course is taught at level 4 in the first year (progressing on to levels 5/6 in yr 2). Before enrolling on the course you will be asked to carry out an initial assessment to demonstrate you are ready to start studying at this level in English. You will also be asked to carry out an initial assessment in Maths to check your level of numeracy. At interview you will be asked to provide evidence of previous teacher training and subject-based qualifications as well as evidence of level 2 (eg. GCSE) in English and Maths.

You are also required to provide a letter from your employer confirming the hours of your teaching practice and the contact details of a subject specialist mentor to support you whilst you study on this course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group sessions in class will involve:
• Tasks, pair work, brainstorm, role-play
• Large and small group work
• Self evaluation of own taught sessions
• Continuous self reflection of learning as well as practice (through videoing own teaching)
• Evaluating practice through observation of other more experienced teachers in your subject area
• Simulated teaching on the course
• Presentations
• Tutorials

On-line activities will include:
• Active participation in forum discussions
• Tasks related to topics covered in class and related to assignments
• Maintaining an online refelctive blog
• Participating in writing a group wiki
• Maintaining a bank of your teaching practice documentation and resources on our e-portfolio

This is a university level course which demands a high level of self study. You should plan to spend at least 6-8 hours a week on personal study and research. We strongly recommend that you do not take on another major course of study at the same time.

Assignments are to be submitted to given deadlines; you may need to plan for more study time to write these.
You will be observed teaching by your personal tutor and have the support of a subject specialist mentor in your own organisation.
