This in-service course forms the second year of a nationally recognised professional qualification for teachers in further, adult and community education and validated through the University of Westminster . You can apply for direct entry if you have completed a course equivalent to Year 1, such as the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector Year 1 or C&G 7407 Stage 2. You need to be teaching a minimum of 5 hours a week in the sector (or equivalent).
You can achieve either Certificate in Education, or, if you have a degree, a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. The qualification is recognised in the national framework as a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).
You cannot directly enrol for this course. There is a selection process, including an interview.

The Cert Ed/PGCE Year 2 aims to further enhance your practical teaching and training skills, alongside developing a critical understanding of the concepts of professionalism, curriculum design, reflective practice and management and leadership.
Some key areas covered in year 2 are:
- principles and practice of curriculum design for inclusive learning
- theories and principles of reflective practice and application to your own teaching
- the concept of professionalism in relation to values and inclusion in the lifelong learning sector
- management and leadership models and skills
- action research in your own subject area
During the course you will be observed teaching and observe other teachers. You will have support from a subject specialist mentor in your workplace.
- Describe recent developments in the lifelong learning sector, and analyse their impact on teaching and learning
- Develop strategies to manage the learning environment
- Identify your own continuing professional development needs and write action plans
- Carry out a piece of classroom based action research
- Analyse and address a range of issues relating to equality, inclusion and managing diversity
- Evaluate and develop the curriculum, drawing on models and theories of curriculum development
- Collaborate with others to improve your own performance
- Contextualise your own practice within the demands of your subject area
- Select and develop E-Learning opportunities for your learners
- Evidence your ongoing development as a reflective practitioner.
This course taught at levels 5 and 6.
At level 5 you will need to be able to
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research, read, comprehend and analyse text, synthesising material from a range of written sources
• Write reflectively and analytically, varying style, format and structure for different purposes, and applying accuracy in grammar and spelling
At level 7 you will additionally need to show the ability to
- comprehend and critically analyse a wide range of academic texts, policy reports and sources
- write critically and analytically, synthesising evidence from research and your own practice.
At interview you will need to show evidence that you are qualified in your subject, and that your communication and study skills in English (level 2 or above) are sufficient to complete the course successfully. You will also complete a diagnostic assessment of your Maths and ICT skills if you have not done so previously.

On-line activities will include:
- Active participation in forum discussions
- Tasks related to topics covered in class and related to assignments
You will be observed teaching in your own class and will have the support of a subject specialist mentor in your organisation.
You should plan to spend at least 5 hours a week on personal study and research..
We will send you a reading list and advice on pre-reading before the course. We would advise you to buy 2-3 textbooks (around £20 each). You will be able to access the texts you need in the City Lit library or online.
This course requires the completion of an application form. After receiving your application form we will invite you to an interview and to complete an initial assessment of your English.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will also engage in self review and give regular feedback to your peers. Your work will be marked internally, and also externally moderated by the University of Westminster.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will have a chance to give your views through verbal feedback in the sessions and tutorials as well as online.
