What is the course about?

This is an introductory professional training course for people interested in teaching/training adults. This might be in adult, community or further education, in the voluntary sector, trade unions or at work. This course leads to the ‘threshold licence to teach’ national qualification, validated by City and Guilds. It is also required before, or as, you start teaching in the lifelong learning sector.

You cannot directly enrol for this course. There is an application procedure and an interview.

What topics will we cover?

The course will include:

Theory
- The characteristics of the adult learner
- Basic teaching methods and techniques
- Planning lessons and courses
- How to check your students are learning
- Some basic group management techniques
- Teaching inclusively

Practice
- Regular teaching practice in your peer group (microteaching)
- Observation visit to a teaching session in your specialist area.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate you understand the characteristics of the adult learner and barriers to learning
- Recognise your roles and responsibilities and boundaries as a teacher, and establish groundrules with learners
- Plan a session for adults, and a short course.
- Choose appropriate teaching/training methods and strategies
- Select and use equipment and resources
- Describe some strategies for managing groups
- Teach your peers effectively in microteaching sessions
- Use an inclusive approach in your teaching

To achieve the award you will need to
- Attend 80% of the course
- Complete a successful microteaching session
- Produce a portfolio of assignments.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

In order to get the most from this course you will need to be able to:
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research, read, comprehend and analyse text
• Write concisely, using different styles, format and structure for different purposes, applying accuracy in grammar, punctuation and spelling

This course is taught at Level 3. Before enrolling on the course you will be asked to carry out an initial assessment to demonstrate you are ready to start studying at this level in English. At interview you will be asked to provide evidence of your subject based qualifications as well as evidence that you are at level 2 (GCSE level) in your English.

You will be expected to be competent in computing skills and be able to use technology for teaching and learning.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group sessions will involve:
- Tasks - individual and in small goups, pair work, brainstorm, role-play
- Large and small group work
- Visit to observe other tutors
- Simulated teaching on the course
- Tutorials

In addition, you will be required to:
- Do some research on your own as guided by your tutor
- Write reflective journals during the course
- Participate in forum discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

We recommended you purchase one of the following:

Wilson, L Practical Teaching: a guide to PTLLS and CTLLS. Open University Press. (approx £20 from www.amazon.co.uk)

You will need a course folder to organise session handouts, task sheets, notes from sessions, etc. In addition, for your portfolio we recommend that you use a lever arch file with a plastic cover, preferably.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form. For us to be able to consider your application you must complete all sections of our application form. We will then invite you for an interview and initial assessment. Your offer of a place is based on the outcome of the complete process.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Self review and peer feedback is encouraged during the course. Your work will be marked internally, and also moderated by City and Guilds.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will also have a chance to give your views through verbal and written feedback in the sessions, during tutorials and online.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Achievement of this course should serve as a useful first step into paid employment. It is the minimum qualification you need in order to start teaching. You can continue from here to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector or PGCE/Cert.Ed. Your course tutor will discuss your progression and give you appropriate advice.
