This course is validated by the University of the Arts London Awarding Body, and leads to the internationally recogonised Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. This award is the ideal preparation for study in higher education at either undergraduate or masters level*. It will also give you the core skills and creative techniques for employment as a practising artist or designer. You will evolve a deep understanding of art and design and will be helped to make decisions about your future within education or the workplace.
Over the four terms of the course, you will be taught a wide range of subject specialist disciplines including: painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital art and video, graphic design, ceramics, fashion and textiles. These will be combined with core skills in drawing, basic photography, colour work, personal/critical research that will steadily develop your individual creative direction. In the final stage you will choose two specialist areas and work towards an exhibition that is open to the public. If you would like to see the 2008 exhibition please use the following web address: http://web.mac.com/tmb59/iWeb/Exhibition%20Site/Home.html.
Stage1 is designed to develop your skills and the fundamentals of visual research. There will be workshops in drawing, painting, 3D and sculpture, for two days per week, and life drawing classes in the evenings on Wednesday for half the term. There is one critical studies project looking at movements in art and design, including a short written report. You will work in a range of media techniques and environments including structured gallery/ museum visits, basic photography and thematic projects. For more detail of the course structure and attendance see course outlines for term 2, 3, 4 or contact visualarts@citylit.ac.uk.

- To be conversant with a number of drawing languages and their differing applications
- To gain knowledge and confidence in handling a range of materials/media

The course is at intermediate level, and we ask students to bring some recent work to the interview. We are interested in anything you have done that you feel is visually creative, in any medium. We especially like to see drawings and sketchbook work. If any work is too large or difficult to carry you can show it as photographs or on your laptop computer.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for
health and safety information, and you will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
One to one group tuition plus reference to books, slides, PowerPoint presentations.
There will be some few irregular teaching sessions such as museum visits, which need to take place other than Monday evening.
You can expect your tutor to give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor. Questionnaires about how you felt the course will be available at the end of your course.
No, materials are provided, but an A4 sketchbook and basic art equipment is recommended to supplement studio work.
Many students are eligible for financial support - to find out more please contact Richard Mason in the Information, Advice and Guidance team at richard.mason@citylit.ac.uk.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Much of this will be documented in your self-reflective journals that will record your own comments and written feedback from staff. Individual assignments will be assessed by tutors and through group critiques. Toward the end of term 1 you will have a short tutorial where your portfolio will be checked and you will be given advice for development.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Your comments and opinions will be informally gathered throughout the course through discussion and in the self -reflective journals. There is a formal board of study meeting once a term where student representatives put forward views to the teaching and managerial staff.
