Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is validated by the University of the Arts London Awarding Body, and leads to the internationally recogonised Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. This award is the ideal preparation for study in higher education at either undergraduate or masters level*. It will also give you the core skills and creative techniques for employment as a practising artist or designer. You will evolve a deep understanding of art and design and will be helped to make decisions about your future within education or the workplace. This course is popular with working adults or those returning to education. There are financial concessions available to students in receipt of benefits. You do not need formal qualifications for entry but we ask all applicants to bring a portfolio to interview.

What topics will we cover?

First term (April- July): you will follow a programme of inductions into the specialist practices of painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital art and video, graphic design, ceramics, fashion and textiles. These workshops run alongside the core programme in drawing, basic photography, colour work and personal/critical research. We will steadily develop your creative and critical skills and ideas through study visits to galleries and museums, and you will write a short essay. In the final stage you will choose two specialist areas that will become the focus of your study in term 3. Term 2 starts in April, attendance is for 3 days per week.

Second term (September – December): two days per week are spent in your specialist pathway choices making your own work and learning specialist skills. A third day in core studies will include drawing and ideas development, critical studies lectures, workshops on making applications to university and crafting written statements about your practice. In the final stage you will start to initiate personal projects and learn to write proposals for your own exhibition. Term 3 starts in September, attendance is for 3 days per week per week.

Final term (January- March): this is your opportunity to fully realise your own creative vision through the final major project. This project starts with a proposal devised by you to reflect your interests and passions as an artists or designer. You will work in your specialist and core areas to realise your ideas and document your research. In the final stages of the term you will plan and present an exhibition, in the studios at City Lit. You can see the 2008 exhibition on the web address above. Term 4 starts in January, attendance is 3 days per week.
For more details of the course structure contact visualarts@citylit.ac.uk.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Present an exhibition that includes your creative visual research and final pieces for the final major project (FMP). Your portfolio will contain studies and worksheets for the FMP and other projects from the course. The range of work and differing media will be chosen by you, with advice from your tutors, including a sketch book and a reflective journal.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Entry to Stage 2 of the Foundation course normally requires the successful completion of Stage1. If you would like more information about the interview please read the information about Stage 1, or arrange an interview by contacting visualarts@citylit.ac.uk. Please leave your name and contact details and a request for an interview time for the foundation course. Direct entry on to Stage 2 is possible in exceptional cases.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by a team of staff comprised of practising artists, designers and experienced teachers using a wide range of teaching methods. This will include demonstrations and expert tuition from leading practitioners, tutor-led discussions, group work and practical exercises, individual research projects and studio-based assignments. There are also formal critical studies lectures and museum and gallery visits. All students will be expected to work approximately a day a week on independent study and there is individual learning support available for literacy skills.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All the materials used in the studios at City Lit are provided without additional charge. We ask you to purchase basic materials for your independent study, such as an A4 sketch book and drawing and painting materials at the beginning of term 1. As the course develops you will need an A1 size portfolio case to carry work. Many students are eligible for financial support - to find out more please contact Richard Mason in the Information, Advice and Guidance team at richard.mason@citylit.ac.uk.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will have two individual tutorials per term, with formal written feedback. Much of this will be documented in your self-reflective journals that will record your own comments and written feedback from staff. Individual assignments will be assessed by tutors and through group critiques. At the end of term 2 you will have a formal assessment in relation to the first three units on the Foundation Diploma. We will check that your portfolio is progressing well and feed back with advice for your development.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Your comments and opinions will be informally gathered throughout the course through discussion and in the self-reflective journals. There is formal board of study meeting once a term where student representatives put forward views to the teaching and managerial staff. Student evaluations are collected through a questionnaire at the end of terms 2 and 4.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Many students go on to study at university or take up work in a field related to their study. We offer advice with applications and possible progression routes * All students who apply to Higher Education get places, on completion of the Foundation course, but progression is not automatic. The level of courses you may successfully apply for depends on a range of factors including your experiences, qualifications and your portfolio. If you wish to discuss your options in relation to progression please contact visualarts@citylit.ac.uk.
