Course outline

What is the course about?

This drawing course will introduce you to a wide range of projects that explore drawing through different techniques, materials and concepts. We will look at drawing both as an art form and as an ally to other creative practices. It is particularly useful for students working on the two-day City & Guilds Ceramics Portfolio course.

The course will focus on drawing as a means of:
- self-expression
- observation and recording
- research
- uncovering and instigating ideas.

What topics will we cover?

In the first term, you will be introduced to a series of diverse drawing projects, inspired by line, shape, movement, colour and texture. You will use a broad variety of materials and techniques that include collage, mono-printing, making books, and drawing the moving figure. Each project also looks at the importance of composition, as well as ongoing introduction to artists and exhibitions. In the second term, personal ideas are explored through projects, and can be developed through art practices of your choice, both 2 and 3 dimensionally.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- demonstrate drawing skills using a variety of materials and techniques, including perspective drawings
- have a broad understanding of the diversity of drawing
- feel confident in your drawing and your personal decision-making
- take part in group crits, and reflect on work with confidence
- talk about the work of many artists, both contemporary and historical
- present a diverse portfolio of work, both 2 and 3 dimensional, with which to apply for the foundation course or a course of your choice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at students with some previous experience in art. It aims to prepare you for Foundation level.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You are taught through group and individual tuition, as well as ongoing demonstrations. The course is structured and projects are introduced at the beginning of each class. Handouts are provided and art books relevant to each project are discussed. Class dialogue is ongoing and group crits are given at the end of projects.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course provides a wide selection of materials and equipment. You may however need to buy or collect certain materials for individual needs. Advice will be offered on materials and where to buy them during the course. The City Lit library stocks a wide selection of art and design books.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You are encouraged to apply for the foundation course, or develop into a specialised course in chosen fine art practice.
