Course outline

What is the course about?

Centred round a study of the more prominent Gothic cathedrals of the continent and England (as well as the use of this style by secular buildings), the course will introduce you to the essential elements of Gothic architecture (technical, aesthetic and religious) and how these related to the people and ideas at the time. Also studied will be the legends and mysteries associated with these buildings, why they still engender awe, and the context within which all this came about.

What topics will we cover?

- The development of a new architectural style in the context of the historical, religious and social background.
- How these buildings were commissioned, designed, built and paid for.
- How these buildings were used.
- What to look for and appreciate when making a visit.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand some of the developments between 1050 and 1450 in relation to history, art, architecture, religion, culture and society
- understand some of the background which encouraged the development of new ideas in architecture
- Recognise and identify the principal characteristics of Gothic and Medieval architecture, with an emphasis on the cathedrals on the continent and in England
- Identify the most prominent cathedrals, and know something of their history, structure, style and legends.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For those with little knowledge of this subject area.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Introductory books should be available from the library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
