Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a gallery-based course which aims to explore the galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Sessions focus on paintings, fashion, sculptures, photography, ceramics and books.

What topics will we cover?

We will explore: artists’ processes and techniques; the historical context in which works were produced; and look at key works in the Medieval and Renaissance galleries; the British galleries; the Sculpture galleries and more.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Have an understanding of key works in the V&A collection
- Have an appreciation of the processes/techniques used by a range of artists
- Be able to discuss works with greater confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is wholly visit based. There will be introductions to the galleries by the tutor and/or gallery staff with the opportunity for group discussion throughout. There will also be some pairs/small group activities. There will be suggestions for background reading but this is not essential.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will be travel costs to the gallery. You may find it useful to bring a notebook.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. All students complete a statement of learning form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. The pairs and small group activities in class will enable you to check your understanding with other students and the tutor. The art history courses VB140 Modern Art 1850-1900 or VB141 Modern Art 1900-50 or other gallery-based courses such as VB144 London’s Smaller Collections.
