Railways, trams and buses enable people to move around; schools and libraries enable social mobility. How have such buildings changed through time? How do these buildings today compare with their predecessors? This course will explore these fascinating questions.
We will discuss and evaluate the style, design and location of:
- railway stations and termini
- underground stations and tube stations
- transport interchanges
- schools before and after 1870
- libraries.
- recognise key features of style and design of public buildings
- locate buildings in chronological and cultural contexts
- take forward your own interests with greater critical awareness.
No previous knowledge required.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to make simple calculations.
