The course was taught by someone with a wealth of learning and scholarship which he wears lightly. His teaching has a light touch and he conveys the information well backed up by a good selection of images. The constraints of ten week course were perhaps too much for this topic which could easily have been double the length. The earlier lectures were more lesiurely and gave us the space to appreciate the growth of Minoan painting. However when the tour moved to the Greek empire and Greek settlements in Italy the pace had to speed up. We went through art in the reigns of the various Roman emperors at great speed. There was inevitably the feeling of a whistle-stop tour and I think we all suffered from having to digest too much information in each two hour class. The worst aspect of this was that there was only one external visit, to the British Museum, which involved another speedy rush through rooms full of the art we had been studying. This in no way is critical of [The tutor]. He covered the material admirably and always had in his mind the thread of the main subject, leading from one example seamlessly on to the next. It is the course length to blame, not the lecturer. As a result this has left me thirsting for a more in-depth look at this fascinating topic.
