What is the course about?

This course offers an introduction to the art, architecture and culture of the age of Alexander the great and the Hellenistic kingdoms. Centred on art, architecture and culture of the Late Classical and the Hellenistic period, the course will examine how the great cultural and political changes and developments of the era also influenced art and architecture. We will also consider how these changes resulted in many fascinating cultural interactions and fusions visible in art, architecture and culture of the period.

What topics will we cover?

- main changes and developments of art and architecture of the period in context of the historical, social and cultural background.
- main styles, techniques and themes common in the art and architecture of the Hellenistic period
- examining and considering the cultural and political complexity and diversity of the Hellenistic world influencing art and architecture.
- what to look for and appreciate when looking at art and architecture of the period.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-understand some of the main changes and developments of art and architecture of the period in context of the historical, social and cultural background.
-have a basic understanding of the main styles, techniques and themes common in the art and architecture of the Hellenistic period
-have an awareness of the cultural and artistic complexity and diversity of the Hellenistic world
- know what to look for and appreciate when looking at art and architecture of the period
- understand some of the background which encouraged the development of new ideas in art and architecture.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is for those with an interest in, but little knowledge of, this subject area.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a mix of illustrated lectures and discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No, though you may wish to bring a notebook and pen to take notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
