An introduction to the art, sculpture, architecture and culture of the classical civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, and their rise and development. We will examine styles, periods, themes and influences, as well as considering the purpose and function of art and architecture within the classical society.
Every lesson will focus on different themes such as: Greece and the influence of the Near East; the development of the human body in classical art; God, goddesses and heroes; the classical temple; power, politics and propaganda; sacred and secular space; and death in the ancient world.

- understand the main function, meaning and purpose of art and architecture in the classical culture and society.
The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught through lectures using visual images, student contributions and class discussion. There will also be a class visit to the British Museum during the course.
It is recommended that you make time to visit museums and the galleries to look at art and artefacts from the classical era, as well as work inspired by the art and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome.
