This is a gallery-based course which aims to explore the art and culture of the Victorians through their paintings, artefacts, homes, literature, and architecture.
We will explore: movements such as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, narrative art, Aestheticism, Arts and Crafts and themes such as Victorian philanthropy, the Gothic and the classical, consumerism, artists’ processes and techniques, politics. Galleries visited will include: the Victoria and Albert Museum; Leighton House; Guildhall gallery; Museum of London; Tate Britain and others. Weather permitting, there will be one walk.
- Have an understanding of key Victorian artists and works
- Be able to discuss the relationship between Victorian art and society
- Talk with confidence about individual works.
The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
The course is entirely visit based. There will be introductions to artists and works by the tutor and/or gallery staff with the opportunity for group discussion throughout. There will also be some pairs/small group activities. There will be suggestions for background reading to complement the course but this is not essential.
There will be travel costs to the gallery and some galleries charge admission. You may find it useful to bring a notebook.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. All students complete a statement of learning form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. The pairs and small group activities in class will enable you to check your understanding with other students and the tutor.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
