The 17th century produced some of the greatest artists of all time: Rubens, Rembrandt, Velazquez and Bernini to name but a few. Explore the work of these key artists and understand the history, styles and ideas that shaped the century.
Each week will focus on a different aspect of seventeenth-century art and culture. Key artists, architects and designers will be introduced and their works placed in a cultural and social context. The course takes a chronological route, decade by decade, through the century, but some classes will focus on crosscutting themes, for example the growth of scientific enquiry as one the defining intellectual traits of the age. The course includes in-depth study of the Baroque and Rococo styles in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Britain.
• Recognise different styles and types of seventeenth-century art and design
• Describe seventeenth-century art and design and express an informed personal response
• Understand key aspects of seventeenth-century history and culture.
The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Each week there will be a slide presentation by the tutor. There will also be some pair and small group activities and opportunities for group discussion. The tutor will supply written notes for each class.
You may wish to buy some of the books on the reading list.
