Course outline

What is the course about?

This course provides the groundwork for willow basketmaking. You will learn to make a round basket using traditional weaves. Students with some experience will explore techniques such as zigzag weave and non-traditional textured surfaces or make square baskets as sustainable containers for the desk or kitchen.

More experienced students will explore more complex projects, which could include domestic items, baskets for the garden, or a particular personal design. Learning about the nature of the various forms of willow will enable you to progress and enjoy the properties and potential of this wonderful material.

What topics will we cover?

Techniques covered will include round baskets - bases, siding, borders and handles and may also include oval and square structures after discussion with the tutor.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Beginners:
- Understand the construction of a traditional willow basket
- Prepare and use willow, follow instructions to make a simple basket.
- Complete a small willow basket.

Improvers and students with experience:
- Understand the construction of traditional willow baskets.
- Prepare and use willow, use current skills and follow instructions to make willow baskets.
- Complete one or two baskets demonstrating an ambitious use of willow.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners, improvers and those with experience.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will involve practical work, demonstration, discussion and observation of basket examples. You can continue working at home but it is not essential.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please do not buy anything specially but if you have any of the following please bring them: a sharp penknife, sharp secateurs, a basketmakers bodkin, a large old towel or sheet for wrapping damp materials and a black plastic bin bag for carrying home unfinished work.

Aso bring a notebook and pencil. City Lit has a basic supply of tools which can be shared between students.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
