This is an introduction to traditional sewing techniques whilst thinking of the book as a 3dimensional object. Bookbinding meets Book Art. Using electrical cabling, thick leather thong and materials on a similar big scale will give you an enlarged overview of how the structures work.
You should be able to achieve at least one finished book or object.
- Sewing on raised flexible and double flexible cord, split and flexible thong
- Attaching the cover to the book block
- Innovative thinking regarding the application of traditional techniques.
- understand the relevance of grain direction in paper
- employ one or more of the above sewing techniques
- sew a multi sectioned book block and attach covers
- select and use materials to create a book structure
- apply your skills to a wide range of projects.
This course is aimed at beginners and those who would like to explore other facets of bookbinding. It is also a good upgrade or refresher for those who may have already acquired some basic sewing techniques. Some bookbinding experience is helpful but not essential.
You should be able to understand simple written and verbal instructions to follow demonstrations and read handouts and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers in order to do very simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you take part fully in this class.
You will be taught by practical demonstration, hands on sleeves up activities, and handouts for future reference. Some information on the historical background will be thrown in giving you a starting point to explore those fascinating techniques.
It will be helpful if you bring the following items with you: metal ruler, pencil, scalpel and spare blades, and scissors
You might have to buy some materials, which will be available for purchase in the workshop. The costs involved should not exceed more than £10.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
