This course is for those with some experience of book conservation. The course includes cleaning, stain removal, deacidifying and repairing of paper, sewing, cover repair (paper, cloth and leather) and board reattachment. You are encouraged to bring items to conserve. Basic tools required.

The course will provide a theoretical and practical knowledge relating to paper conservation and book repair. Students will, through practical exercise, gain experience in the techniques to be able to conserve and restore their own items.

In terms 2 & 3 students will work individually on their own items, and be given practical demonstrations and workshops as new skills develop.
- Demonstrate the basic skills required to restore partially decayed pages from a book.
- Understand why paper decays, and how to arrest it.
- Conserve a cloth bound book.
- Conserve a leather bound book.
This course is for those who have some experience of book conservation.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Each student will work on their own item (initially supplied by the tutor). Step by step instruction, demonstrations, and one-to-one practical teaching.
Yes, you will be required to purchase some materials and basic tools, (brush, scalpel and a bone folder). These can be bought once the course has started, the tutor will give details.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
