What is the course about?

The course will provide a theoretical and practical knowledge relating to paper conservation and book repair. Students will, through practical exercise, gain experience in the techniques to be able to conserve and restore their own items.

What topics will we cover?

The conservation of a paperback book
Why paper decays
De-acidification
Paper repair
Wet lining & lamination
Impurities in paper
Book repair
Sewing
Cloth case binding
Working on your own project

In terms 2 & 3 students will work individually on their own items, and be given practical demonstrations and workshops as new skills develop.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate the basic skills required to restore partially decayed pages from a book.
- Understand why paper decays, and how to arrest it.
- Conserve a cloth bound book.
- Conserve a leather bound book.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for those who have some experience of book conservation.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student will work on their own item (initially supplied by the tutor). Step by step instruction, demonstrations, and one-to-one practical teaching.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Yes, you will be required to purchase some materials and basic tools, (brush, scalpel and a bone folder). These can be bought once the course has started, the tutor will give details.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
