Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn about this elegant binding style with articulated joints, which lends itself to quality one-offs as well as small editions. Get a first grip on working with leather and encounter some of the challenges of fine binding.

What topics will we cover?

We will produce a binding called ‘Millimeter Binding ‘ or Edelpappband and will cover topics leading you towards fine binding such as: backing a book block; edgeparing and paring with the Brockman paring machine; hand decorated paper; cover in leather and paper; filling-in to level surfaces; casing in and setting joints.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Back a book block
- Assemble a case with articulated joints
- Pare leather strips
- Part-cover case in leather
- Decorate your own paper
- Fill in to level surfaces
- Case in
- Set joints
- Be aware of variations of this binding style
- Assess your work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at students with no or little experience in bookbinding and who are wanting to develop skills in working with leather. Students who have been on this course before are invited to refine their skills and/or work on their own variation of the theme.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, group and individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will have to bring your own small hand tools, and you will have to pay for certain materials that you use; some are available for purchase at City Lit. You may occasionally have to get specific paper, leather or tools; you will be given advice on this as the course progresses. For the first session it would be advisable to bring the basic set of tools: a sharp pencil, scissors, bonefolder, scalpel and spare blades, set square, apron and a metal ruler and a sketchbook to take notes. There will be some tools available in the bindery but you may have to share them with a number of students.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
