Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to make a multi-sectioned structure and look at book artworks to identify possibilities of linking context and technique on a practical as well as a conceptual level.

What topics will we cover?

We will make a hard case binding and will cover techniques such as multi-section sewing, edge colouring, backing cloth with paper, quarter/half bound case.

We will look at a range of decorative book binding techniques and bring them together in one book, enabling you to employ these techniques for a variety of book projects in the future. If your work is book art orientated, this will give you more facets to articulate your concept in a three dimensional way.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the importance of grain direction in paper and card
- Cut, measure and fold accurately
- Choose appropriate materials
- Handle a variety of glues and understand their properties
- Link concept, structure and material
- Apply the learned techniques to future projects
- Make a multi sectioned book block with coloured edges.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at beginners who have an interest in book art and bookbinding and who would like to acquire the practical skills to get started, students with some experience of bookbinding and everybody who would like to extend on from course VD228: Book Art linking concept and structure.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, group and individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will have to bring your own small hand tools, and you will have to pay for certain materials that you use; some are available for purchase at City Lit. You may occasionally have to get specific paper or tools; you will be given advice on this as the course progresses. For the first session it would be advisable to bring the basic set of tools: sketchbook to take notes, a sharp pencil, scissors, bonefolder, scalpel, set square and a metal ruler. There will be some available in the bindery but you may have to share them with a number of students.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
