Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is intended to be a progression route from beginners’ bookbinding to enable you to progress to courses requiring greater experience. On this course you will further your knowledge of and ability to use bookbinding techniques, tools and materials.

This course will give you practise in making a leather-bound book and increased confidence in understanding and using different bookbinding materials, techniques and skills.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn how to select materials for the components of good-quality leather bookbinding, how to handle and maintain tools and equipment and how to undertake the techniques necessary to create a binding you can be proud of.

We will also look at the historical background of the structures we are using and at contemporary makers and examples.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

· Sew a multi-sectioned book on either tapes or cords
· Appropriately round and back a multi-sectioned book
· Make and attach ‘made’ endpapers.
· Make and attach book boards using tapes or cords
· Sew historical or contemporary style headbands
· Select and maintain paring knives and tools
· Pare goat or calfskin for covering
· Either cover a rounded and backed book in full goatskin or cover in calfskin the spine and corners of a rounded and backed book sewn on raised cords.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate level course for students with some experience in bookbinding although not necessarily in using leather.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, individual and group tuition, individual and group work and group discussion.

You will have to be able to work in your own time away from City Lit to complete the course requirements.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Some basic materials are included in the cost of the course. Other materials such as board and paper can be purchased from the classroom and students will be expected to provide for their own, more specific requirements. You will have to provide your own basic small tools set once the course commences. You will be advised on these as the course progresses. Please bring notebooks to each session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
