Focusing on ideas and content we will be using various low-tech processes to generate and explore writing practice alongside the sequential possibilities of simple book structures. We will be experimenting with source material, altered books and appropriated texts using collage, rubber stamp, and structural techniques.
We will look at and discuss examples of artists’ books which use text in innovative ways. We will alter and work over existing printed materials to produce new bookworks. On task led outside visits we will produce and gather textual material to develop in simple book structures. You will have one-to-one advice from the tutor to enable you to explore and develop your individual ideas.
- Use techniques such as collage and erasure to transform found materials and texts to convey ideas
- Develop sequential poetic texts working with the possibilities of simple book structures
- Produce one-off bookworks
- Develop an understanding of the use of text in artists’ books.
Some book binding experience is helpful but not essential.
Although no previous creative writing experience is necessary, you need to have an interest in poetic writing practices.
You should also be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safely information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
By group discussion, visual aids, practical tasks and individual assistance. There will be several outside visits to collections and museums that are within a short bus ride or walking distance from City Lit.
