Each student will make a star-book binding from a range of different coloured papers. The book will be a suitable size for photographs, but we will look at other imaginative ways of using the structure.
Although some materials will be pre-cut, students will follow written and diagrammatic instructions to fold, glue and stitch papers accurately. Boards will be covered with decorative paper and ribbons attached.
• Take home a star-book made by you in the class.
• Follow a worksheet to make your own star-books of any size and understand how to choose the appropriate materials.
The course is open to both beginners and students with some experience of bookbinding. The handout will contain written and diagrammatic instructions, and can be adapted to suit specific needs. Students will need to be quite attentive in their work, able to measure and cut accurately and able to deal with fiddly, smallish pieces of paper.
You should be able to understand simple written and verbal instructions to follow demonstrations and read handouts and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers in order to do very simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you take part fully in this class.
The whole class will be taught together as a group, by explanation and demonstration, and individual attention will be given to each student as required.
The cost of materials is included in the course.
Basic tools are available in the classroom, but if you have your own equipment, you are encouraged to bring it. We will be using scalpels, rulers, pencils, rubbers, bookbinding needles, set squares, paste brushes and small flat brushes.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
