Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for beginners who would like to experience and explore the three major ways of making pottery – throwing, coiling, and slab building. Pots will be decorated, glazed and fired during the course. Kiln firing will be briefly explained and all work will be fired.

What topics will we cover?

The aim of this course is to introduce basic pottery techniques. You will learn to make pinch and coiled forms, slab built forms and simple thrown forms. You will be shown simple surface decoration techniques and apply them to the forms you make. Work will be glazed and fired. A slide talk will be given on contemporary ceramics.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Make simple forms using the techniques of
- Pinching.
- Coiling.
- Slab building.
- Throwing.
• Decorate the forms with coloured slips and underglazes.
• Glaze your work using department glazes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
