Course outline

What is the course about?

This course gives an excellent opportunity for students with some previous knowledge of ceramics, to work independently on ideas and self planned projects. Working alongside the City & Guilds 7111 students, learners are able to use the equipment and materials within the department. Although the majority of the teaching is given to the City & Guilds structured course, the ceramic workshop students also receive tuition and advice throughout the course.

What topics will we cover?

As this course is for students who want to work independently on ideas and techniques, the programme is decided on by each student. If unsure, help is given to choose which area of work to pursue. You may also want to join in on some of the projects given to the City & Guilds students. These projects are - throwing on the wheel, hand-building (slab building and coiling), design and sampling. Decoration and glazing is brought into each project.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Research ideas, design and make ceramic forms, confidently and creatively.
- Develop self planned projects and gain confidence in working independently.
- Experience working with a broad range of decorating materials and techniques, including glazing.
- Have a knowledge and experience of working with different ceramic processes, using hand-built and thrown techniques.
- Have knowledge of the work of contemporary ceramicists.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to all students with some prior knowledge of Ceramics, and for those who are able to work largely on their own.

You will need to be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through individual tuition, as well as ongoing class demonstrations. Feedback is given, with an encouragement to develop personal ideas.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Most materials are covered by the course fee.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. At the end of each project the tutor will hold a group crit to discuss the work made. At the end of the course there is a formal assessment by City Lit staff and City & Guilds external assessor.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
