Course outline

What is the course about?

This ceramics course will teach you the basic skills and techniques for making pots on the wheel. Through ongoing tutor demonstrations and the experience of making, you will develop an understanding of how this process works. You will learn how to manipulate clay to create bowls, jugs and vases. For those with some experience there is the chance to develop ideas further, as well as refreshing your skills.

What topics will we cover?

The main focus of the course is learning the techniques of throwing, including clay preparation, refining forms and generating ideas for work on the wheel.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Beginners:
- Demonstrate a level of skill and technique in the making process.
- Make simple forms with control.
- Understand the principles of throwing.
- Work confidently and develop ideas on the wheel.

Intermediate/advanced:
- Demonstrate a more developed level of skill in the making process.
- Develop ideas further.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to anyone interested in using the potter's wheel.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by one to one tuition as well as group and individual demonstrations. This will be supported by discussions and visual references.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There is a charge of £1.50 per pound/500g for fired clay and you may wish to purchase your own tools. Your tutor will advise you.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
