Course outline

What is the course about?

This ceramics portfolio course combines the tuition of ceramics and drawing techniques, alongside an encouragement to develop personal ideas. This will enable you to build up a diverse body of work to apply for further education. Working on a variety of set projects, you learn a broad variety of 2 and 3 dimensional techniques that encourage the development of personal thought and expression. The work will be exhibited at the end of the course.

What topics will we cover?

Projects in 2D and 3D are divided as follows: In term one and two the ceramics classes are taught on Wednesdays and drawing is taught on Thursdays. Students will be making work to fulfill project briefs.

In ceramics classes, clay, glaze research, hand-building, mould making, throwing and firing processes and techniques are taught and used to complete the projects. Written research will be undertaken to underpin the practical studies.

In the drawing days students are introduced to a wide range of projects that explore drawing through different techniques, materials and concepts. This includes collage, painting, book-making, observational and life drawing. Drawing will be looked at both as an art form and as an ally to other creative practices.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create a body of ceramic work which fulfils a personal approach to the given projects.
- Create a personal portfolio of 2D work which shows an understanding of 2D techniques.
- Show by various means an understanding of ceramic historical and contemporary issues.
- Use clay and related creatively.
- Show work in a course exhibition.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some knowledge of ceramics is necessary to apply for this course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will need to be able to read a range of written materials and write short pieces of text. You should also be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstrations, group discussions and crits, one to one tuition, visual information, handouts and slide shows.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are provided. 2D and 3D materials may be required at different stages of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
